Tuulahdus Australiasta

“I think the most difficult thing, for your generation of university administrators, is remembering that you are running a billion-dollar institution that is not a corporation. Our staff, both academic and general, are proud to work here precisely because it’s a university. It’s concerned with the making of highly sophisticated knowledge and with the most advanced and demanding forms of education. These are the public interests for which Australian society puts resources into the university system. The staff are trying to make this happen, and a good personnel policy for a university will respect and support them. The very last thing a university needs is an intimidated and conformist workforce. “

Taidehistorian ja elokuvatutkimuksen vanhempi yliopistonlehtori Laleen Jayamanne jatkaa:

"For example: recently we were told by senior research and management staff that what was needed NOW was “quality” not “quantity”. This comes within months of all academic members of staff being threatened with redundancy if they did not meet an arbitrary and retrospective quantity of research, with little or no consideration of quality. This kind of double talk, unaccountable capricious rhetoric to which we are ceaselessly subjected, makes me feel that I am a minor player in a very badly scripted absurdist play, perhaps Ionesco."

Hallintohenkilöstöä edustava Mark Johnston kertoo:

"When you tell people that you work at the University of Sydney, the usual first question is what do you teach? I used to reply that I’m just general staff, but over the years I have learned to leave the “just” out of that answer. I’m proud of what the general staff at this university accomplish every day. I remember a time when the University management was proud of us too."

Huippujulkaisun anatomiaa). Meillähän on tenure track, johon pääsevillä on turvattu uraputki (ks. Sivuraiteella). Meillähän on hallinnossa varsin paljon työmahdollisuuksia (ks. Hallinto paisuu). Samaan aikaan tutkimukseen panostaminen alkaa kuitenkin muistuttaa fetisismiä (ks. Listafetisimiä), suuri osa henkilökunnastamme on yhä prekaareja pätkätyöläisiä (ks. Omaehtoista työtä?), ja yhä useampi varoo sanomasta eriäviä mielipiteitään ääneen (ks. AA: anonyymit avautujat).
